To Kill A Mockingbird: Childhood Experience :: essays research papers
To Kill A Mockingbird: Childhood Experience à à à à à Have you ever thought of an answer to reply to your children, when they ask you, ââ¬Å"What was the world like when you were a child?â⬠, ââ¬Å"What things that happened that impressed you most when you were a child?â⬠or ââ¬Å"How interesting is your childhood experience?â⬠. Everybody must have had their childhood. Some of the experiences may cause them to smile, or even laugh, while some of them may bring back bitter memories. It is always hard to express the childhood incidents or experience in a clear and interesting way, since they were past memories that happened long time ago. Moreover, when a person has grown up, they will never have the same feeling which they might have in their childhood. However, the authors Harper Lee and Mark Twain can express their own childhood inside the stories they created, in a lively and realistic way. The two novels To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer have a very similar characteristic. It is the way they describe a person's childhood experience, and their feelings and new knowledge that come out from those experiences. This characteristic, however, has given me a big revelation after reading the two novels. The novels show that the childhood experience of a person has a great positive influence on his personality, behaviour, and ways on dealing with others. This idea has been shown by the authors in both novels. à à à à à From the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, one could discover that innocent behaviour and misunderstanding can lead a child to view a person or thing incorrectly and incompletely. This behaviour can also lead a child to a wrong perspective. In the first part of To Kill a Mockingbird, the main characters Scout, Jem, and Dill thought that the Radley family and their member, Boo Radley, as strange and unnatural human beings. They described Radley's house as ââ¬Å"That is a sad house....â⬠(Harper Lee, 48). This is a ââ¬Å"factâ⬠they heard from their neighbours. Until one day, their neighbour Miss Maudie's house was found on fire. While Scout was standing outside in the cold watching the fire, someone from behind her and put a blanket around her shoulders. Later, Scout and Jem realized that there was only one person in town who had not fought to put out the fire -- Boo Radley. Scout asked, ââ¬Å"Thank who?â⬠(Harper Lee, 76). Jem replied, ââ¬Å"Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he put the blanket around you.â⬠(Harper Lee, 76) It was then that Scout and Jem started

Character of Frair Lawrece in Romeo and Juliet
Friar Laurence is presented as a holy man who is trusted and respected by the other characters. He is an important character in the drama, ââ¬â¢Romeo and Juliet,ââ¬â¢ by ââ¬ËWilliam Shakespeare. ââ¬â¢ The Friar's role as the friend and advisor to Romeo and Juliet highlights the conflict between parents and their children within the play. Friar Lawrence does not immediately approve of Romeoââ¬â¢s plan to marry Juliet, and asks him ââ¬Å"Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear,/ So soon forsaken? Romeoââ¬â¢s arguments in favor of his current love are hardly very creditable: ââ¬Å"Her I love now/ Does grace for grace, and love for love allow/ The other did not. â⬠This is dangerously close to saying that Julietââ¬â¢s easy enough to make it worthwhile. Friar Lawrence doesnââ¬â¢t agree to help them because he is convinced by Romeoââ¬â¢s sincerity, but for a specific reason (ââ¬Å"in one respectâ⬠, as he says), namely that ââ¬Å"This alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your householdsââ¬â¢ rancor to pure love. â⬠As Romeo is isolated from his friends and family, The Friar acts as a father figure to Romeo. He is one person who Romeo trusts and this is relevant as he is the first person Romeo goes to talk about his love for Juliet, ââ¬Ëmy heartââ¬â¢s dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet. ââ¬â¢ The Friar is a religious idealist, a philosopher who understands the big picture while other characters in the play are too involved in their interrelationships to share his perspective. He is a holy man, anxious to help the lovers in order to reconcile the Montagues and Capulets and bring peace to Verona, ââ¬Ëfor this alliance may so happy prove to turn your householdsââ¬â¢ rancor to pure love,ââ¬â¢ showing us how his actions were well planned off.Friar Lawrence is the mastermind of the plot. He first creates the plot by agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet, he does this because he thinks the mar riage will bring peace to the families, ââ¬â¢turn your households rancor into pure love,ââ¬â¢ this brings out his intelligence. His wise character is brought out when he says, ââ¬Ëwisely and slow they stumble that run fastly,ââ¬â¢ foreshadowing to us that something unexpected is going to occur. Act four Scene 3 is driven by the conflict between the older and younger generations. The Friar chastises Romeo and reminds him of his good fortune that the Prince has commuted his sentence from death to a ââ¬Å"gentler judgmentâ⬠of exile. Although Romeo heretofore sought the wise counsel of Friar Laurence, a holy man of spiritual learning, now that Romeo's situation has grown critical, the Friar's advice is not as well received. The Friar's contemplative work is far removed from the blind passion and emotional torment that Romeo is experiencing. Romeo, in his agitated state, is unable to accept the calm, philosophical reasoning the Friar offers. The Friar's willingness to he lp Juliet reflects his concern for his own role in the unfolding events. He has performed an illicit marriage and must now strive to prevent being implicated in the bigamous marriage between Juliet and Paris. The Friar has exposed himself to substantial personal liability, but he faces many opportunities to absolve himself of any involvement. The Friar is a peace-loving yet powerless character whose efforts to promote good are as subject to the whims of fate as anyone else's in the play. The Friar uses his knowledge of flowers and herbs to conceive Juliet's remedial concoction. In Act II, Scene 3, the Friar describes the dual qualities of the flower that is capable of healing yet has the power to act as a poison. The drug the Friar offers Juliet is compounded of opposites and will give Juliet the appearance of death so that she can regain her life and her love. The Friar's plan serves as the mechanism of hope for Juliet, but due to the influence of fate, becomes the vehicle of the tr agedy itself. I feel that Friar Lawrence plays an important role in this drama as he helps the drama to develop and makes it interesting. He is the one who starts the plot, furthers it and then finally ends it.

World Religions – Buddhism
The idea of a ââ¬Å"union of oppositesâ⬠pervades Taoist writings and exerts a tremendous influence over the root philosophical concepts of Taoism, encompassing issues which may be considered metaphysical or even mystical, but also influencing issues of applied ethics and personal behavior. The idea of conjoined opposites begins at the root, metaphysical level of Taoist thought which asserts that ââ¬Å"being and non-being give rise to each otherâ⬠; a stark departure from Christianity which posits that God is eternal and so has always been (Chen, 1989, p.à 55).This metaphysical assertion continues from the macrocosmic (universal) to the microcosmic (personal) levels, where opposites are seen to give rise to the world of motion and being: ââ¬Å"The difficult and easy complement each other, The long and short shape each other, The high and low lean on each other, Voices and instruments harmonize with one another, The front and rear follow upon each otherâ⬠(Chen, 1989 , p. 55).Following up on the universally derived union of opposites from a macrocosmic level, the Taoist asserts a union of opposites, also, within the self and in regards to personal conduct: ââ¬Å"the sage manages affairs without action,â⬠and therefore should practice ââ¬Å"creative quietudeâ⬠in pursuit of personal wisdom and even ambition. The idea that opposites are, in nature, united through the Tao means that moral divisions are also damaging and artificial. The true sage accomplishes merit â⬠without claiming meritâ⬠and since ââ¬Å"he does not claim merit, His merit does not go awayâ⬠(Chen, 1989, p. 55). Such seeming paradoxes are often difficult for Westerners to understand The idea that the universe itself could be comprised of a union of opposites, rather than a pervading and omnipotent single-Creator is not compatible with idea of Christianity which elevates a dualistic vision of the universe with good and evil at odds with one another and a single, benevolent God.Taoism seems to reflect a much more organic and complete of vision, at least in my opinion although the extension of Taoist philosophies into western religion is probably not something which will happen any time soon, such a ââ¬Å"union of oppositesâ⬠would provide a rich synthesis of spiritual and philosophical ideas. Evaluate factors that influenced the effectiveness of each interaction Essay
In this piece of coursework I will be analysing and evaluating the factors that influence the effectiveness of each interaction in relation to the one to one set at a GPââ¬â¢s for a patient that has really bad back pains and is complaining about how sharp the pain is. I based the one to one interaction on a patient with back problems and theyââ¬â¢ve come to the GPââ¬â¢s for something to be given to them. I thought of this because itââ¬â¢s something I went through and I thought it would be nice to let people know what process I went through and how hard it was. The first factor, I thought that influenced the one to one interaction was the patient and doctor taking turns while talking and not interrupting. Turn taking is a major factor that involves our everyday lifestyle and itââ¬â¢s helpful because you know you will get a turn at having your own say. Turn taking helps out a lot especially if you are with younger children or at a GP. For example, the patient came to her doctor and she told her doctor what was wrong with her and how much sheââ¬â¢s in pain, the doctor listened to her while she was talking and didnââ¬â¢t ask questions until she finished talking then, the doctor answered all her questions and asked her own questions trying to figure out what was wrong about that patient and what actions will need to be taken for the patient to feel better. Towards the end the doctor referred the patient to her local hospital for an x-ray to see whatââ¬â¢s going on. Whatââ¬â¢s good about turn taking is that everyone listens to each other and you donââ¬â¢t get interrupted also you know youââ¬â¢ll have enough time to talk while others have a chance to think about questions to ask you. The second factor I realised that influenced the one to one interaction was listening. Listening is letting people talk and you concentrating on just what they are saying, listening is a very important communication skill because if you donââ¬â¢t listen you may misunderstand something which may leads you to thinking differently and feeling insecure. Read more: Describe factors which may influence childrenââ¬â¢s development essay Listening was one factor that influenced the one to one interaction because if one of us didnââ¬â¢t listen while the other person was talking we may have not heard what they were saying or concentrated enough to understand what they were saying which can lead to giving wrong answers which could be a problem to the persons health thatââ¬â¢s why when others are talking you always have to listen. For example, in the one to one interaction Emily was my partner and she helped me concentrate listening toà her because little things distract me easily so I had to make sure I listened to her also, we had our script which was used as a prop if we missed out something we carried on listening to each other while looking at what was said to not give the wrong answer. We listened to each other because we knew how important listening is and we were successful at getting through the one to one interaction without not knowing what was going on because we listened to each other. The third factor that also had an influence on the one to one interaction was respect towards each other. Respecting each other shows you give them pride and you are happy about what they are saying or doing also, respect comes from learning to care about people from older ages because we have to respect people to get along with life if we donââ¬â¢t respect then there could be consequences. Respect is very important because we all have to respect everyone no matter what their race, gender, age or features are we have to because we live in a society that moves with respect. For example, if we didnââ¬â¢t respect the army that looks after the country for losing their lives to make the world a much happier place and for us to be safe then that will be a major consequence because whatââ¬â¢s the point of those people dying for us if we canââ¬â¢t have a little respect for them. The reason why I thought respect had a influence in the one to one interaction was because if we didnà ¢â¬â¢t respect each other we wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to understand each other and we wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to do the doctor and patient script because a doctor always has to respect their patients no matter what happens they have to so does the patient too. An example of this would be, when the patient walked into the room I felt the respect from the patient by the way they answered me and facial expressions. This had a big impact on the interaction because it made it less awkward to talk with the patient and not only was the patient comfortable with asking questions to do with her illness but as a doctor being able to have enough respect from a patient to ask them what areas of the back hurts and being able to have a look at the patients back to check whatââ¬â¢s wrong. The last factor that had an influence on the interaction was how professional I was. Being professional can be difficult because if youââ¬â¢ve always been in an environment thatââ¬â¢s unprofessional and you donââ¬â¢t know where to use what language that can be an issue. So being professional was key in this interaction because I was a person that had a reputation,à that had power to help people and look after them. If I didnââ¬â¢t act professional the patient could have not taken me serious but I did. The reason why being professional was an influence in the interaction because I realised the more professional you are no matter where you are you will always be looked up to and thatââ¬â¢s why I thought it was an influence because it made the patient feel secure with me, it made the patient understand no matter what happens I will always be supporting the patient which would make both of us happy. For example, the minute the patient knocked on the door I dropped everything I was doing and stood up and shock the hand then I made the patient feel welcomed and asked how they were then they started explaining what the problem was and the actions I was doing showed I was professional.

Corporate Governance in China Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Corporate Governance in China - Essay Example In china, corporate governance has received much attention in the recent years and there have been debates on how china can develop an effective corporate governance system that can improve the number of listed companies in the country. The issue of corporate governance finds its roots and effect in the stock market which is responsible for listing companies. Before a company is listed in the stock market, it usually undergoes a rigorous process of scrutiny on issue of corporate governance. (Berle and Mean 2003, p. 286) This paper will look closely at the corporate governance in china and relate the practices to one of the company, Sainsbury PLC to see how it can adopt such measure and to look at the extent in which it has been able to integrate such measures in its operation. It will first start by looking at the corporate governance in china and later look at Sainsbury PLC and how the aspect of corporate governance can be implemented in the company. Let us first look at the corporate governance landscape in china. The mandate to improve corporate governance in china has been one of the aims of the government for along time. It started with the making of the stock market which came into being after the opening of the economy about one and a half decade ago. The need to improve the corporate governance landscape has been one of the mandates that the government has taken in developing a financial market that serves the country and the business community alike. In recent past, china has made great strides towards the issue of corporate governance which has been through the relationship of the government and the players in the private sector. Government agencies that have been handling this issue have given various laws, rules, regulation and standard that are aimed at putting in place a firm foundation and a framework for corporate governance in the country. (Kim and Giles 2003, P. 51) In order to understand practice of corporate governance in china, we have to accept that china has been undergoing through a transition process which has seen the development of market-oriented economy from a planned economy although this pace of transition has varied with various sectors. But the biggest challenge that the country has been facing has been on the ground that it has taken to development of the concept when most of the important functioning financial market structures like a well defined legal system, regulatory agencies and others have not been put in place or have not been functioning to the required standards. (Clarke 2003, p. 53) Reports coming from survey on Corporate governance (CG ) in the country shows that there have been marked willingness by many companies in china and many businessmen to develop accepted standard of CG not only for the domestic market but also they have been casting their sights higher than the domestic market. They have shown willingness to improve CG practices like shareholder rights, environmental control, improved level of transparency, empowering of boards, and other practices which are aimed at improving the business landscape of the country. There has been a general recognition that improved CG makes an organization more attractive to the investors and more profitable. Let us look at some of CG practices in china and the recent efforts by

Samsung company analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Samsung company analysis - Essay Example The market is expected to grow at 7% annually globally between 2012 and 2015 with the 3D TV product category as the fastest growing segment in the industry. Sales in consumer electronics recorded a 10% growth in 2011 (almost $965 billion) from a 13% sales growth in 2010 ($875 billion) (Reportlinker 2013). One of the leading consumer electronic brands in the industry is Samsung Electronics, part of the Samsung Group which is headquartered in Seoul Korea. The company registered revenue of KRW 145,044,766 (USD 129,666,338) in the 3rd quarter of 2012 (latest figure available) and had been experiencing an average increase of net profit of 50 % since 2009 (Data Monitor 2011). The company occupies the top position in the television and monitor product category and the worldââ¬â¢s largest producer of DRAM, SRAM, and flash memory. It is also involved in the manufacture of other consumer electronics product such as smartphone, computer tablet and home appliance. According to its CEO, Samsun g prides as the ââ¬Å"fastest in commercializing original technologiesâ⬠where innovation is encouraged by holding ââ¬Å"competition between four main divisions--semiconductors, telecommunications, digital media and flat-screen panelsâ⬠on who could best deliver the most innovative product that made the company a market leader in color TVs, VCRs, liquid-crystal displays and digital memory devices (Foroohar 2004). II. Environmental/back ground Analysis The external environment of Samsung is highly competitive (see appendices). Industry players are always looking for ways to innovate their products and ways to cut on their prices to make their product more attractive to the consumers. In addition to it, they are also looking for ways to develop new products that would debunk existing products such as the case of Sony Walkman that became obsolete with Appleââ¬â¢s iPod. Suppliers are also used as strategic weapon to leverage companies against competitors. In sum, the cons umer electronics industry is one of the most competitive industries because many players wanted to cash in on its phenomenal growth. III. The Company ââ¬â Internal Analysis Samsung has undoubtedly strong brand recall. This is substantiated by Fortuneââ¬â¢s ranking of Samsung Electronics as the second most admired company in global electronics which bids well for Samsung in its position in the market. A strong brand recall provides a company a strong competitive edge because consumers tend to patronize brands that they trust. Research and development is one of the strongest if not the strongest component of Samsung Electronics as a company. This constant focus on research and development enabled the company to become one of the leading brands today from being a nuisance brand in the 1990s. This penchant for research and development has been the companyââ¬â¢s practice since 1990s particularly during the Asian Crisis where it was the only activity in the company that Samsung did not cut on cost. It continued its focus on R&D that in 2010, it spent as much as 5.9% of its total revenue in research. This focus in R&D did not only help Samsung to dominate certain product categories but also helped the company to launch new products recently and contributed to its success signfiicantly. Its effort and allocation of its resources

Peer Review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Peer Review - Essay Example With this, the consequence is viewed not as a private issue but as a global issue that ought to be taken up by all well meaning advocates of human rights. The writer suggests an action-driven solution in the sense that the writer wants to see the transportation of segregated students to White schools, where they can learn about the culture of other people and how to socialize easily with these people. The argument in favor of the solution is however weak as the writer does not give any legislative backing to the solution. The writer uses variety of research sources including court cases on the issue of segregation. There has also been sufficient analysis of the evidence. However, the analysis of sources would have been more proactive if primary sources were also used. The writer links the thesis or main argument directly to the consequences of poor education in the country; stating that the nation would have to build more schools if attention is not given to proper education. Given the prompt, the writer makes direct reference to it and tags segregation as a poor educational policy that is recipe for a degenerated society. Having tagged segregation as a bad educational policy, the writer goes ahead to clearly elaborate the consequences of segregation, stating that it could be a reason for moral breakdown in society. The reason for this argument was fused in the believe that when people are segregated one from another, they do not come to accept the personality of other people and as such have no inner regrets when they are offending them. The writer suggests a solution that is based on personal appeal to affected people. For this reason, the writer holds the believe that programs like Magnet Program can be used to attract and appeal to students in segregated schools to get attracted to their colleagues in other integrated schools. The writer argues in favor of the solution by drawing on
